St Peter’s Basilica is not only a symbol of fundamental importance to Christianity, but it is also a unique example of Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture. Tourists of all faiths visit the Basilica to discover and admire the creations of the geniuses of Michelangelo and Bernini.

Michelangelo’s Pietà, an extremely moving sculpture depicting the lifeless body of Jesus in the arms of his mother Mary, is a fantastic piece that can be found in the Basilica. This famous Renaissance piece is only a couple of metres away from one of the most famous pieces of décor: Bernini’s Baldachin. This immense bronze canopy sits above the burial site of St. Peter. The Baldachin is not only jaw-dropping, but it is a prime example of the style that flourished around Europe at the beginning of the 17th century, Baroque.
